Citronella (Cymbopogon Nardus) is widely known for its use as an insect repellent, but it’s so much more than that. Citronella is a natural antiseptic and has anti-bacterial properties, while it’s non-toxic and non-irritating to the skin.
Citronella can be added to a carrier lotion and applied to the skin or mix it into a light weight carrier oil such as sesame oil and spray it on the skin to deter insects. You’ll need to re-apply periodically as natural sweating and exposure to water will decrease its efficacy.
Combine Citronella with Cedarwood* for an effective mosquito deterrent with a pleasing aroma. Diffuse the oils together for patios and outdoor spaces. If you’re feeling “crafty”, you can make your own Citronella candles with a craft store candle kit. **Avoid cedarwood if you are or may be pregnant.
Citronella has historically been used to assist the immune system, colds, flu, excessive perspiration, fatigue, headaches, migraines, rheumatic and arthritic pain. Citronella is a great oil to use for air freshening and purification. It promotes a clear head and uplifts the spirits.
Basic cautions: Always use essential oils with caution and recognize that these oils are strongly concentrated – a little bit goes a long way. Do not ingest essential oils or take them internally in any way. Always use essential oils in a carrier oil or lotion. Keep all oils out of the reach of children. When trying a new oil or blend, always do a patch test.
