Interesting fact about Patchouli Essential Oil (Pogostemon cablin)……The first cashmere sweaters and shawls imported from Kashmir, India, were perfumed by the crushed Indian patchouli leaves in which they were shipped.  The scent became fashionable and so popular that cashmere – either domestic or imported – had to carry the sensuous scent of patchouli if they were to sell at all.  The allure of patchouli was and is synonymous with India.  Patchouli is steam distilled from leaves.

Whether you adore or detest patchouli, the social scent of the 60’s and 70’s is still quite popular as people have rediscovered that this pungent oil smells sweeter on the skin and is one of the few scents that improve with age.  It’s also been used for stress relief, as an insect repellent and it is effective in masking other unwanted odors.  Its main benefit is that it creates a sense of loving and relaxation and historically used in baths, perfumes, and skin care.

Patchouli is one of the few essential oils that can be applied directly to the skin.  It’s a key ingredient in many sensuous perfumes – mixed with lavender, vanilla, amber, orange, clove and/or rose it makes an intoxicating fragrance that lingers longer on the skin than alcohol based scents.
